Ever wake up in the middle of the night with stomach pains? It is probably because you ate something that upset your stomach before you went to bed. If you want to be able to get a full night’s rest without screaming “ahhhhhhhh”, monitor what you eat! You should be giving yourself 2 to 3 hours of rest after eating a big meal before you sleep. If you want to eat before bed, eat a small portioned and healthy snack. Here is a list of some foods to avoid right before you get shut eye!

Avoid High Fat Foods
  • Pizza
  • Burgers
  • French Fries
  • Spicy Food
  • Chips
  • Heavy desserts
  • Candy

Eating high fat foods right before you sleep may ruin your metabolism because of the extra fats being stored. This can also contribute to weight gain because those foods are not being digested properly.

Avoid Caffeineted and Acidic Drinks
  • Alcohol
  • Soda
  • Energy drinks
  • Orange Juice
  • Coffee

Although alcohol can make you sleepy, drinking it before bed is actually bad for you. While you are asleep, the drinks are still in your system which can cause disorientation the next day such as mood swing and decreased concentration. Consuming alcohol right before you sleep may cause a ‘hangover’ the next day because there is still alcohol in your system and it is not properly digested. Energy drinks, coffee, and soda are high in caffeine which will cause you to not sleep. Orange juice is high in acidity which can cause heartburn if it is still in your system.

Eating before bed is not a crime, but it is risky! Try eating something portionable , and healthy! Remember, an extra meal is extra calories you are storing! There are many other options if you get hungry. Go to bed feeling good, and wake up feeling good!
