Can Diabetes Be Reversed? Taking Another Look At Treatment Options
You’ve seen commercials. You’ve heard people say it. “I reversed my diabetes!!” They all claim to have cured their diabetes, but is it true? Can diabetes be reversed? Read on to learn the truth about treatments that claim to reverse diabetes.
Can Diabetes Be Reversed?
In essence, not really. You can send Type 2 Diabetes into remission, but there is no cure. There are things you can do to help control your diabetes and stop having to take medications, but it cannot truly be “reversed.”
Doctors refer to it as diabetes being “in remission.” This is the closest you can get to “curing” type 2 diabetes.
You will always have diabetes, but if you learn to control your blood glucose levels and maintain a healthy weight, you could remain off medications. If you regain weight that was lost and stop controlling your blood sugars, the diabetes will return.
How to Put Type 2 Diabetes Into Remission
First and foremost, you will want to change your eating habits. Introduce more fruits and vegetables into your diet. Choose whole grains instead of white, refined grains. Limit sugary drinks and sweets.
Cut out soda and other drinks that contain a lot of sugar. The best thing to drink is water, but if you’re looking for a bit of flavor, try adding berries, lemon, or other fruits to your water. Iced tea (unsweetened or sweetened with Stevia) is a good alternative as well.
Choose whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, wild rice, whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta, and whole wheat tortillas. The more fiber in the grains, the less they will spike your blood sugars. Keep your carb count low (about 150-180g per day) to help with that control.
Eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables each day. Try to incorporate at least one fruit or vegetable of each color into your daily diet. That ensures you are getting most of the micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) and phytonutrients (good stuff that only comes from plants) that you need.
Second, you should exercise at least 30 minutes each day. Lifting the potato chip to your mouth does not count as exercise (or so I’ve been told…). What is the best exercise for you? Whatever activities you actually ENJOY doing!!
Do you enjoy walking your dog? Make it a brisk-paced walk, or even jog if you like that more. Prefer bike riding? Go for it.
Do you love nature? Take a walk in the woods. Try hiking. Go outside and play with your kids (or grandkids, or nieces/nephews!).
Prefer to swim? Swimming is a great exercise. It works the whole body, it’s refreshing, and it’s fun. Can you tell swimming is my favorite?
The point is, it doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you do it. Get out there and get moving. Build some lean muscle mass. Burn fat. The combination of the two will ensure that you’ll need less medication to control your diabetes!

When you have Type 2 diabetes, you cannot go back to the habits you had before you were diagnosed. You will always have to maintain a healthier lifestyle.
Checking your blood sugar will always be a part of your life. You will always have to be more conscious of what you’re eating. However, you MAY not always have to take medications.
When you get your weight under control and maintain a healthy weight and watch your carb intake, your body doesn’t require as much insulin to keep your blood sugars down. When the requirements aren’t as high, your pancreas may be able to keep up with demands.
If your pancreas is keeping up with demands, you won’t need the medications that you needed before.
This is what happens that makes people ask, “Can diabetes be reversed.” It is not reversed; however, it is under good enough control that medications aren’t necessary.
So, keep checking your blood glucose. Start exercising more and eating less. Change the things that you eat so your body can use the energy from the food more efficiently. Get yourself into remission!!
