So, there I was, at the doctor’s office in disbelief at the words she spoke. She told me I need to follow a low-sodium diet. I knew exactly what this meant.
From that point on, I would have to avoid certain foods (you know, all the good ones that I loved…), read labels, pay attention to a nutrient that is abundant in pretty much EVERYTHING… this was a nightmare!
How would I go out to dinner? No more fast food! No more chips…or popcorn at the movies…or lunch meat! How would I survive?!
All is Not Lost!
Well, turns out it’s not the end of the world after all. I just had to make some adjustments and get used to less salt in & on my food. So, how do you do it? Here are some tips to help you adjust.
First, do your best to avoid processed foods. Food manufacturers tend to add a lot of sodium, both as a preservative and as a flavor enhancer. This includes boxed foods, prepared foods, and processed cheeses.
Instead, make things fresh. Look up low-sodium recipes online using fresh produce and lean meats. Purchase low-or-reduced sodium broths and make your own soups.
Second, avoid added salt. It will take a little time to adjust, but you will get used to the natural taste of food. Use salt-free seasonings to enhance flavors. Lemon, herbs, spices…they all add depth of flavor to your food and soon you won’t miss the salt at all.
When you do go out, ask for the nutrition facts menu. Look for items that have close to 500 mg of sodium or less. Sometimes it’s difficult to find them, but with some modification, you can make anything fall in to your low-sodium diet.
What can you do?
Avoid salad dressings, opt for oil & vinegar instead. Look for “light” or “healthy option” menus. Ask your server if they can recommend low-sodium options. If all-else fails, request your food to be made without salt.
Finally, keep an eye out for hidden sodium in sweets, ice cream, and other non-salty foods. It can sneak in to a lot of different foods where you wouldn’t expect it.
Bioterra Herbs Detox supplement can help rid your body of salt cravings and help reset your system as well!
Don’t panic! You will get through this just like I did. It just takes a little time and adjustment to follow a low-sodium diet.
