There are tons of books, websites, and articles on detox of all shapes and sizes, but can a detox diet really help you lose weight? We’ll explore that question and more today. Continue reading to learn about detox weight loss.
The True Purpose of Detox
For centuries upon centuries, cultures all over the world have practiced detoxification of the body in some form or another. There has to be some benefit, right? Maybe.
Many cultures practice detox in the form of cleansing the mind, body, and soul for spiritual purposes. Most of these detox practices involve complex rituals based in long-term traditions.
Modern detox practices are aimed more toward the body, less toward the mind and soul. Our current detoxes involve flushing toxins out of the body and aiding the liver in doing its job.
The Modern Process of Detox
Usually a detox diet involves a period of fasting (elimination of food from the diet), then gradual re-introduction of specific foods. Sometimes there is no fasting period, it’s just a switch from unhealthy eating to health-conscious eating.
There are detox teas and detox pills and all sorts of kits and brews and miracles that are offered. Some detoxes are based on liquid diets (only juice or tea or water), some are plant-based, and some involve small portions of all your favorites.
The common factor in all detoxes is an offer of detox weight loss and overall better health. You will see offers to get rid of toxins and shed pounds in a matter of days.
What is the truth in all of these detox fads?
What is Detox Weight Loss?
When you do a detox, you probably will lose weight, but the problem is, you usually won’t keep the weight off. This is because the weight lost is typically water weight.
Water weight can fluctuate on a daily basis, so it isn’t usually permanent. It varies depending on how much sodium you consume, how much fluids you take in, and different other factors.
In order to achieve true weight loss, you need to lose fat. This only occurs with a well-balanced diet and exercise plan.
Do We Need to Detox?
Maybe we should change how we think about detox. The body has a miraculous way of working and ridding itself of toxins (that’s what the liver is for!), but sometimes it needs a little help.
It stands to reason, if you stop ingesting toxins, it helps the body to get rid of them more easily. This is what the true methods of detox are about.
Where do Toxins Come From?
Most toxins that end up in our bodies come from the foods that we consume. When you take in processed foods, smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol, or do drugs, you’re putting toxins in your body.
You can remove the toxins in your life by changing your eating habits, changing your exercise habits, limiting alcohol, and eliminating drugs. If you follow these steps, then good health will follow.
How to Attain Detox Weight Loss
If you really want to lose weight, the best way to do it is with a lifestyle change. Try to switch your diet, exercise more, and get better sleep.
When you’re choosing your food, think colors! Choose brown rice, whole wheat bread, and whole grains. Choose fresh fruits and vegetables, limit fat, and choose lean meats and plant-based proteins.
It’s called “Clean Eating.” You can read a detailed description HERE. In essence, you just eat food that gives you energy and makes you feel vibrant, like the ones I described above.
Try to avoid refined sugars, refined grains, candy, and saturated fat. To replace these items, use natural sweeteners like honey or stevia extract, the whole grains I mentioned above, and fruits.
The sweetness of fruit, especially berries, combined with the fiber content, both satisfies your sweets craving and levels out your blood glucose levels.
If you’ve read any of my other blogs, I may sound like a broken record, but get out there and move! Go for a walk or a jog. Go swimming. Take your dog for a walk. Take a Zumba class! Go dancing!
Just get outside (or inside) and do anything to get your body moving.
Most Americans don’t get enough sleep or they don’t get good quality sleep. Follow these steps for a good night’s sleep.
- Have quiet time before bed. Dim the lights, put on some light music or sleep sounds (ocean waves is my favorite!). Get your body relaxed before you try to go to bed.
- Go to bed at a decent hour so you can get at least 8 hours of sleep.
- Keep your phone on your dresser or somewhere away from your bed so you’re not tempted to play games, read, or search the web until the wee hours of the morning.
- If you’re having trouble sleeping, try a nice soothing cup of chamomile tea with honey.
Weight loss will come, but it’s best to lose weight in a slow, steady manner rather than with quick detox weight loss. If you lose the weight slowly, and you maintain your healthy habits, the weight should stay off and you’ll feel great!
