Good Morning, Yerba Mate!

Waking up in the morning can be a difficult thing. No one wants to leave the consuming warmth of being all snuggled up in bed. Alas, to be productive, one must. For those of us who aren’t particularly “morning people,” this time of the day sucks. We turn to alternatives to ease the pain of waking up like coffee, carbonated sodas and energy drinks. Yerba Mate is a plant traditionally consumed in central and southern South America. It is a very popular drink in countries such as Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Uruguay and many more. Yerba Mate is a great coffee replacement in your morning routine because it has “the strength of coffee, the health benefits of tea, and the euphoria of chocolate” all in one cup. This awesome plant triumphs as the most balanced in terms of energy and nutrition.

-Abundant in antioxidants
-Contains caffeine (ah, wonderful caffeine!)
-Low tannins, so it is strong like coffee but less bitter
-Not oily or acid forming, less likely to cause stomach problems or jitters

Yerba Mate Versatility

Drinks made with Yerba Mate vary greatly. It can be enjoyed hot or cold, sweetened (recommended) or straight, and can be prepared in a tea infuser, French press, coffee machine or an espresso maker. When hot, it is typically paired with milk and honey and when served cold, it is paired with lemon and mint. This plant’s versatility is a great asset, you can play with ingredients and find the perfect drink for you! Iced Yerba Mate with mint would be the perfect way to wake up on a hot summer day!

Other Uses

People around the world have used Yerba Mate for reasons other than waking up, naturally. It has been used to improve mood as well as relieve headache and bladder issues. Some even swear by its ability to help with weight management, although there is not much support behind this claim.
