What is Arthritis?
Having arthritis could be a drag! Being constantly in pain no matter what you do, whether you’re sitting or just laying down you’re in pain! Plus it doesn’t help that once you get diagnosed with it you can’t do anything about it as there is no cure. no fun! Roughly 350 million people worldwide have arthritis, and nearly 40 million of those 350 million are in the United States. You might be thinking, What is Arthritis?
Arthritis: is painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints. whether it’s your knees, fingers, back or feet.
It is very common for people to be diagnosed with Arthritis nowadays although the illness is not well understood. No one is safe from its grasp. People of all ages can be diagnosed with Arthritis and it’s actually the leading cause of disability in the United States. A lot of people think that Arthritis is a disease that only old people get since their joints are deteriorating but this is false because nearly 300,000 American Children have some type of Arthritis. Having Arthritis can come with many challenges, for the most part, you will have to change your eating habits AND living habits altogether. You’d be surprised to think that food actually has a really big influence on your Arthritis because some foods actually deteriorate your joints faster!
How Does Arthritis Get Affected By Food?
There has always been speculation about food and how it plays a major role in the development of Arthritis and treating it. One of the biggest factors causing Arthritis is ironically dairy! Yes, you heard that right, I know we all grew up having our moms tell us “drink your milk so your bones can grow big and strong!” But in modern times this has been proven false! In reality, Dairy is actually extremely bad for your joints! But why is this? It’s clear that a diet high in saturated fats, which is something that is very plentiful in cheese and full-fat dairy products, can increase inflammation in your joints. This makes it tricky for most physicians because other fatty acids found in dairy have been linked to health benefits such as a reduced risk of diabetes. Dairy has been shown to be one of the most prominent foods to cause joint pain, arthritis, diabetes, and yes, cancer too. It’s been linked to body pains, headaches, poor exercise recovery, allergies, and digestive issues. It is also acidic and is often filled with excess hormones, pesticides, and bacteria!
What Are The First Signs Of Arthritis?
Sometimes it isn’t easy to tell if your symptoms are Arthritis based or not since many of these symptoms are mimicked by other diseases. Some of the symptoms include:
- Joint pain
- Joint stiffness
- Loss of range of motion
- Back pain
- Joint swelling
So what diseases have to same symptoms as Arthritis? The most common one is Gout because gout can still be technically considered a form of Arthritis. Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis that develops in some people who have high levels of uric acid in the blood. The acid can form needle-like crystals in a joint and cause sudden, severe episodes of pain, tenderness, redness, warmth, and swelling.

What Is The Best Food/Vitamin For Arthritis?
Calcium: Calcium is used for the treatment of low calcium levels and resulting bone conditions such as Arthritis. Calcium is also used for premenstrual syndrome and leg cramps in pregnancy. Ingesting calcium while having Arthritis can be very beneficial as it is also used to regulate high blood pressure and reducing the risk of colon and rectal cancers.
Ginger: Studies suggest that the compounds gingerol and zingerone found in ginger are essentially accountable for the root’s ability to fight inflammation. Which Foods Should You Avoid?
Fried food: So why is fried food bad for people who have arthritis? Well, when eaten in excess these foods will increase body fat which will put extra stress on your joints and it amplifies your risk for wear and tear on your joints. Body fat is not an inactive substance, it is metabolically alive, proficient in producing hormones and chemicals that actually increase levels of inflammation. To make things worse, some restaurants fry their foods in hydrogenated oils, like Corn oil for example. Which means you may also be getting a dose of dangerous trans fats.
Sugary Sweets: Everyone loves candies! I know I do, but foods like candy, cookies, and fruit juice can skyrocket your blood sugar levels and make you feel very lethargic. The reason why sugar is bad for people having arthritis is that of the sugar and its refined carbs. High amounts of sugar in your diet result in an increase in AGEs,(Advanced Glycation End Products) which can result in inflammation.
Alcohol: You can say that alcohol has a direct relation to arthritis. Gout is a condition where a buildup of something called uric acid happens in your hands or feet, and it’s incredibly painful. It can be temporary, or it can come back over again. Doctors believe that alcohol and arthritis, at least in this situation are related because beer and liquor increase the risk of developing gout. Gout is triggered by purine, and the amount of purine in alcohol is high.
