Herbs to Keep You Warm!
It’s friggin’ cold outside today!! Although I would much rather prefer layering on clothes than being in sweltering heat that I can’t get away from, I think we would probably all agree that the cold is much more enjoyable watched through a window, under 10 blankets with some sort of heat source happening very nearby. And, I don’t know about you, but when it’s cold, I begin to feel like all I want to do is sleep. So, here are some herbs I found that can help you stay warm so you can productively get through your day (or get you through your night if you don’t have a heater – ugh!).
Ginger is very well known for improving circulation. Improved circulation makes the body heat up, helps to calm digestive and respiratory issues, and even boosts the immune system. Apparently dried ginger is even more warming for the body than fresh ginger. You could do a triple whammy to keep warm and eat ginger carrot soup, drink some ginger tea, and a take ginger bath. Blah-dow!

2. Cinnamon and other spices
I think anyone’s gut instinct to stay warm would be “find me spicy herbs, now!” Herbs like cayenne that are too spicy can actually make you sweat therefore releasing heat – not good. Cinnamon, cumin, paprika, nutmeg, and allspice actually generate heat by increasing the body’s metabolism. Did you know cinnamon twigs are actually good for heating up extremities, while cinnamon bark is good for heating up the core? Who woulda thunk??

3. Fennel Seeds
If you have ever been to an Indian restaurant, you will usually notice that there is a small bowl of fennel seeds by the door. They work by heating up the body’s core temperature, which as a result, aids in the body’s break down of food. And fennel seeds are surprisingly tasty!

A warming herb that not only increases body temperature but also aids in reducing swelling and discomfort if you happen to have any inflammation issues. It’s a two-fer!

5. Coconut oil
Most noteworthy, Fats will warm up the body because your body’s metabolism has to get revved up to break them down. But, did you know coconut oil can also be used as a moisturizer, which will prevent the body from losing heat through dry skin? I love facts on the internet!
