Before trying to understand IVF success rate numbers, what is IVF to begin with? IVF stands for “In vitro Fertilization”, which is when you combine eggs and sperm outside the body. Once this is done and an embryo or embryos are formed, they are placed back in the uterus.
This trend has been growing in popularity and has been mastered over time. The very first case of this happened in 1978 with the very first “test tube baby” as it was called then.
Although this practice has become more popular than in the late 70’s, the cost of IVF is very expensive and only around 5% of couples having infertility issues opt for this option.
Many other couples opt for more affordable options such as fertility supplements, stress relievers, better diets, detoxing, exercise & even chiropractor visits.
Still, IVF has brought over 200,000 lives into the world to this date!
IVF Success Rate Issues
As with any other medical procedure, there are certain factors or issues that can impact the level of success for Invitro Fertilization for a certain individual. Many factors should be considered before going through with this process.
This is why it is advised to visit your Doctor before you undergo this expensive and complex process. Out of the various factors affecting IVF success rates, here are a few to watch out for:
IVF Success Rate Issue #1: Your Lifestyle
The two main factors to worry about when it comes to lifestyle is obesity and substance abuse. Of course everyone knows that being obese or overweight is not a good thing for your health. However, being overweight can actually directly affect fertility levels.
Overweight women have a lower IVF success rate than women of normal weight. Overweight women have more problems with infertility overall.
On the other side of the spectrum, underweight women also have a lower IVF success rate. The bottom line with weight issues is to try to maintain a normal weight if undergoing these procedures such as In Vitro Fertilization.
Substance abuse is the other lifestyle factor that will definitely hinder your IVF success rate. Of course we know that drugs are not good for you but this is not the topic for this argument. Sure, any drug such as cocaine and heroin are going to negatively affect your IVF success rate. However, something more common as smoking can also be bad enough to hurt your IVF success rate.
IVF Success Rate Issue #2: Age
Just as you are probably aware that after age 40, a woman’s chances to bare a child are slim and actually quite dangerous. Once a woman is in her 40’s, her pregnancy becomes questionable and health risks are on the rise.
This actually begins around age 35 when a woman’s reproductive system begins to go on a downward slope.
However, there are plenty of women who have given birth to a child in their 40’s but please keep in mind that the risk factors are on the rise here.
When it comes to IVF success rate, age is actually very important. Younger women obviously have a higher IVF success rate than older women. This is simply because younger women will have higher quality eggs than older women.
In fact, the IVF success rate of a woman under 35 is 40%. In contrast, the IVF success rate of a woman over 42 is only 4%.
IVF Success Rate Issue #3: Level of Ovulation
One thing to keep in mind about In Vitro Fertilization, is that it is completely dependent on Ovulation.
Ovarian dysfunction will definitely hinder IVF success rate. High FSH levels, which indicate a low ovarian reserve, may reduce the chances of IVF success.
Anovulation means lack of ovulation, or absent ovulation. Both anovulation and oligovulation are kinds of ovarian dysfunctions.
IVF Success Rate Issue #4: Miscarriages vs Previous Pregnancies
If you had successful pregnancies in the past, this is a clear sign and an indication of a higher IVF success rate.
However, if you have had a miscarriage or even numerous miscarriages, this can definitely hinder your chances for success.
IVF Success Rate Issue #5: Fertility Clinic you choose
Yes! Even the fertility clinic you decide to undergo your treatment can greatly increase or decrease your chances for success.
How do you choose the right clinic? There are a number of variants that you will need to pay close attention to. Here are some things to watch out for when choosing an IVF Clinic in the near future:
- Live birth rate/ IVF cycles started
- Qualification of staff
- Laboratory used by the clinic
- Types of patients accepted (age & fertility problem)
- Rate of patients pregnant with twins, triplets & more
There are so many factors and so much more information to learn before undergoing an expensive procedure as is In Vitro Fertilization. Before you undergo this process, please do much more research!
The more you learn about IVF, the better equipped you will be with the knowledge and procedures. Learning and knowing more will give you a better perspective of your chances.
The more you comprehend, the higher you set your IVF success rate!
